Do Air Purifiers Work with Mould?

Airborne mould spores that contain mycotoxins can cause various health issues for those in the same environment. To combat this, air purifiers work well to filtrate the air and mitigate any mould issues that you may experience.

Airborne mould spores that contain mycotoxins can cause various health issues for those in the same environment. To combat this, air purifiers work well to filtrate the air and mitigate any mould issues that you may experience. Through the use of HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, air purifiers can trap these spores on the filter and output clean filtered air. These filters also work on filtering other particles, such as dust and pollen.

Air purifiers are effective with mould, however…

Air purifiers do not remove the mould issue. Ensure you are cleaning all surfaces following the IICRC mould standard, to ensure you are remediating all active and non-active mould growth. Mould can off-gas and produce mycotoxins and it can also release mould spores. Air purifiers are effective in filtering out mould spores. However you will need to remediate the active mould growth first, or the spores will continually be released into the air.

It may be a good idea to use humidity meters – hygrometers to test the moisture level in your home and ensure their moisture high humidity is not contributing to the moisture problem in the home. If the humidity is too high in your property, you may need to consider using dehumidification or venting the property to control moisture levels. Adding an air scrubber can help assist in removing the mould spores,

Are Air Scrubbers effective with mould?

The simple answer is yes. However, as established earlier it will not remove active mould growth. Also, remember that mould spores need natural fibre to feed on. Lower quality HEPA filters can have cellulose filters that are susceptible to mould growth. This is why you should hire air scrubbers that have synthetic material such as the ones we have available. Additionally, you should ensure that the air scrubbers you are using have a tight seal around the filter to ensure no contamination leaks past.
